Old Colony Gets Blue Cross Blue Shield Annual Service Day Facelift
BHA teams up with Big Sister Association to revive Old Colony
On Wednesday, September 17, 2014, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Massachusetts built upon its more than 75-year legacy of community partnership and support with their fourth annual enterprise-wide Service Day: One Community. One Blue. The Big Sister Association of Greater Boston partnered with staff from the Old Colony Housing Development, the Boston Housing Authority and BCBS to work on enhancing the Old Colony Teen and Senior Center, sprucing up the grounds outdoors, painting the hallway railings in select buildings, and converting the unused storage room into a children’s play area. The goal of the Old Colony service project was to impact healthy child development, education enrichment, sustainable health care systems, and healthy environments and family nutrition.
The goal of the annual service day was to address specific community needs. The Old Colony Housing Development is like two communities in one. While there is a newly renovated portion of the development – homes with bright, fresh facades – run by Beacon Properties, there is an older portion of the development, not yet renovated, run by the Boston Housing Authority. This year’s service day not only provided much needed upgrades to the play and learning spaces located in the development’s older section, but also uplifted the general environment for families and visitors.
